Musical Box Society

Membership of the Musical Box Society

Meetings

Normally two ‘national’ weekend meetings are held each year in the Spring and Autumn, in different locations, centred on one or more collections or other places of interest.  As well as visits, there are often talks and/or demonstrations, although for most people the highlight is the opportunity to make new friends of catch up with old ones.

In addition a number of one-day smaller regional meetings are held around the country.

For more details of forthcoming meetings see our events page.

Publications

The Musical Box Society of Great Britain publishes a 40-page, A4, full colour magazine four times a year, sent free to members.  Non-members can order back issues, where available, by going to ‘shop’.

In addition, following the publication of a number of hardback titles (some still available or available in electronic form), the MBSGB offers a great environment for pursuing further research, with introductions to ‘experts’ and access to archival materials.

Previous publications:

  • The Organette Book (supplement now available)

  • The Disc Musical Box Book (supplement now available)

  • Mechanical Music on Postcards

  • (Cylinder) Musical Box Tune Sheets, with 4 additional supplements
  • The Nicole Factor

Although now out of print, we can sometimes locate second-hand copies, or in some cases offer an electronic version for down-loading.

Research

Collating, annotating and up-dating of the tune sheets is an on-going project.

The Musical Box Society has also assisted with academic research, and advised on film sound-track.

It encourages further research into mechanical music-related topics through networking and making its archival resources available.

Education

The Musical Box Society of Great Britain promotes a wider appreciation of mechanical musical instruments through its publications, its YouTube channel and organising meetings and public demonstrations and displays.

It also holds an archive of ephemera, auction catalogues, books relating to mechanical music and a comprehensive library of magazines from ‘sister’ organisations.

Networking

Being a member brings opportunities for access to people and places.
